Great Gull Island is a 17 acre island situated at the mouth of Long Island Sound off the coast of New York. The Great Gull Island Project headed by Helen Hayes is dedicated to the long term monitoring of North America's largest breeding colony of Common and Roseate terns. This project has now expanded to include surveys of South America where the seabirds spend their nonbreeding season.
